5 Ways To Flawlessly Wear Your Mini Dress

Posted on Jan 9, 2016

This is one of the many dresses that we have listed and just like the midi guidelinesguidelines we wrote earlier, we figured the mini deserves its own.

First a short background on minis. Before the 1960s, western women were very conservative in their dressing. Showing and flashing legs then was a big no no. Well, that was until Mary Quant in her boutique on King’s Road, in London, revolutionized fashion forever. Although there is a debate on who really started the mini, everyone seems to agree that Mary commercialized the trend.

African women on the other hand wore what we now call the mini skirts before western clothes were introduced. The younger women wore micro minis made with beads. Southeastern Nigerians called them jigida. Other Africans also wore small skirt-like clothing made with different materials, some of them organic.

Guidelines On How To Wear A Mini Dress

  1. One of the main rules with minis is that if it is short, you do not bare your chest. It is either one or the other. If it is a mini tube dress, you have the option of wearing tights or a jacket. You should draw everyone’s attention to just your legs.

Covering up the upper body is also important for ladies with broad shoulders or big busts, it gives you a trim look. One shoulder covered up can make all the difference.

  2. When choosing a mini dress, ensure that the length stops after your fingertips. Tall women should not wear micro minis because it makes them look a little bit ridiculous. Micro minis will make you look like you are wearing half of your dress.
Your age is also a deciding factor on the length of your dress; the fingertips rule might not necessarily apply if you are older.

Also, if you have large thighs, choose a dress that will cover them.

  3. Mini dresses look awesome when you wear them with heels. Your legs will appear longer and thinner which is what you want. However some mini dresses still look great on flat shoes especially if you are aiming for a causal look.
  4. There are different types of mini dresses: bodycons, flares, bohos, etc. You do not want to only get the tight ones because they are mostly suitable for clubbing. You can look chic with a flare mini dress. Experiment with different designs, you just might surprise yourself.
  5. Now, when you want to wear a flare mini, make sure you wear the right underwear. You could wear tights to cover some skin. The colour of your tights should complement your dress or skirt.
Still on underwears, if you are going to wear a tight dress, ensure you do not show visible panty lines (VPL).

Points To Remember

  • Wear your mini with tights or jeans. Although this will give you a casual look, your legs will be covered if you are not comfortable with showing them.
  • Avoid baring your upper body and legs at the same time.
  • Choose the right underwear.
  • A clutch will give you a more sophisticated look than a tote or your regular bag.
  • Be cautious of where you are wearing your mini to. You don’t want to give people the impression that you have zero fashion and common sense.
  • Shapewear can help give you an extra confidence boost when wearing a mini.
  • All the shapewear in the world will not give you the confidence you need if you are not comfortable with this style. You will be showing some skin and need to be bold to pull off the look. If you are not sure about some parts of your body then it will be better to wear something less revealing.
